A couple of years back I got stuck in my own bedroom. I know, how did I manage that? Well truth is I don’t know, but in the end in the early hours of the morning I had to have someone break the door down to let me out.It was an entertaining evening on all accounts!
Later on as I reflected on the whole experience the spiritual parallels were clear. What are the things in our lives, where we get stuck in the room?
The door looked ok from the outside. It looked fine from the inside but it wouldn’t open, it wouldn’t even budge. I had 2 options either stay in the room, or have some one else break in to break me out (When faced with the option of peeing in my bin the second option won out) !
I couldn’t do it by myself, the door opens inwards. It had to be opened from the outside.
What are the reasons that we are stuck in the room?
Maybe its fear, shame, disappointment, grief…They leave us trapped unable to get free.
In the room the only thing to keep you company is the lies, the things you hear. The condemnation:
You aren’t good enough. You cant do it. You don’t deserve it freedom ,is not yours to be had. Stay here.
You need a truth bringer to come; someone who has the truth, truth that’s so powerful it breaks you out! We need the door breaker of Truth, Jesus himself to come. We can’t do it, and it has to be Him. We need Jesus to break in to break us out! He is the Way. He is the Truth, and the Light.
He is the Way out of the room. He is the Truth that combats the lies, and He is the Light that lights up the path.
But He won’t come uninvited.
I had to ask someone to break in to my room. We have to initiate, God won’t come uninvited. The freedom can be ours but its ours to choose and we have to ask him to come.
So what’s the thing keeping you in the room?
Will you let Jesus come and break you out?
It might be that He comes in power, that He bashes down the door, and the whole street can hear it. It might be that He comes gently with the word of truth that contains so much power that the door can’t stay shut against it.
But either way, He wants to come in; there is freedom on the outside.
After my door had been broken down, I needed a new one! I bought a new door but it was a little bit too big. It doesn’t shut properly. There is always a little light that creeps around the corner.
Like a beam of truth that permeates the darkness.
I don’t know how you got trapped in your room. But if you do, don’t let yourself end up there again. Always leave a gap for the Light, for the Light has come into the world. He’s the light that shines in the darkness and the darkness can not extinguish it.
